Choosing the right floor tile depends on a number of factors, including whether it is to be used indoors or in an exterior application, surface (slip resistant or not), traffic, maintenance, size, colour, pattern and type.

Historically the typical size was 12" x 12", today however, there are numerous options - smaller and larger which can make an interesting impact. The layout of tile will provide some visual interest whether it is on the diagonal or using a stepped or square pattern.

Tile manufactured for floor applications can be used on walls but the reverse is typically not true. Floor tile is usually rated by the manufacturer for suitable application. Some may be rated for residential use only while at the other end of the spectrum are ones rated for heavy commercial such as airports. Generally speaking many floor tiles these days are of a quality that can be used both in residential and commercial applications. So then you choice is more about the aesthetics, size, finish – polished or matte, rustic or smooth than anything else.
