What to Look For:

Type

Durability

Ceramic tiles are available at different levels of durability, depending on how they were manufactured and their composition. Ceramic Tile Wear Ratings are outlined by the Porcelain Enamel Institute as follows:

  • Class 1 – this is the lowest ranking and is recommended for wall use only
  • Class 2 – for wall use as well as areas with very light, shoeless traffic, such as a bathroom floor
  • Class 3 – for walls, countertops and floors where there is a normal daily level of activity
  • Class 4 – All residential applications and light commercial, including heavy traffic and areas likely to be exposed to dust and soil
  • Class 5 – Heavy commercial use as well as all residential, can withstand very heavy traffic

Size

There was a time when tiles were only available in 4¼" x 4¼: and 6" x 6" sizes. Today, tiles are available in a vast variety of sizes from as small as 3/4" mosaics up to 48". The size of tile you select can affect the overall look of your design; larger tile give an illusion of space and complements modern designs. Smaller mosaics are becoming increasingly popular and are available in an array of colours and materials.

Using different sizes of the same type and style of tile can add visual interest. A different size or shape can be used as a pattern or for borders. Mosaics are available pre-set in patterns to add a focal point.

Colour, Pattern and Texture

Research shows we have emotional reactions to colour so it follows colour can affect the mood of a space. The many options available in tiles today allow you to create the mood you want anywhere in your home. From hot colours for high energy to cool colours that sooth and relax through neutrals and earthy tones which are serene and calming

Different layouts can provide an interesting visual element to ones tile installation. Some will create the effect of a carpet while other will give the illusion of big open space. By using interesting layouts one can define spaces from each other and create “rooms" where walls may not exist. Random patterns are created by using several different sizes of the same tile and you will find that many manufacturers already provide formulas how to achieve this look.

Textures in tile can give the impression of fabrics or other materials and add an interesting element to any design. At Pembroke Tile & Stone you will find tile that give a modern twist on traditional damask wallpaper, or have the look and feel of linen, leather or even wood.

Natural stone are products of nature so differences in colour, tone and veining from piece to piece are to be expected and create part of the character and unique beauty. With some natural stone one should expect small holes and other imperfections thanks to Mother Nature. Ceramics are manufactured under hi tech conditions however one should anticipate small differences in colour, shading and size from shipment to shipment. PTS tracks products by lot and caliber and we strongly recommend purchasing sufficient material to complete the area including a small allowance for cuts and spares. We cannot guarantee that subsequent shipments will be an exact match to current inventory.

Style

Tile can reflect your personal style, whether it’s traditional, contemporary or something a little more daring. Working with other elements in a room, select a tile or natural stone to complement the design style. Materials like marble and ceramic lend themselves to a more traditional look, while the newer materials, such a metallics and bamboo or glass, have a modern edge.

Working with an experienced designer can be valuable when determining your style and choosing what elements would work best in your space. Interior Designers are trained to enhance the function, beauty and quality of a space and even a short meeting with a designer can be useful and is well worth the investment. The Bermuda Society of Interior Designers list its members on its web site or the Yellow Pages will provide a listing of Interior Designers.
